This research aims to engage contemporary challenges to the traditional doctrince of sin, by a constructive retrieval of Luther and Augustine. Recent critiques of affective Augustinian hamartiology have tended to focus on the experiential valence of the doctrine, and its apparent inapplicability to the particularities of modern existence. Augustine's doctrine of sin was, however, deeply conditioned by a specific understanding of human psychological experience, and Luther continued to focus as he reinterpreted Augustine in the sixteenth century. A reading that pays attention to these experiential and affective dynamics in this strand of tradition therefore offers exciting points of contact with the contemporary debate.
