Aerosols in ventilation systems of energy efficient buildings affect indoor air quality. This experimental and computational project examines the influence of flow speed, level of turbulence and aerosol size on aerosol tendency to concentrate and deposit in typical ventilation ducts. Findings will guide active and passive control for efficient filtering.Abstract: Ventilation in modern day living is vital in maintaining good health. Ventilation needs filtration systems to filter out harmful aerosol. These harmful aerosols may originate from outside such as soot particles from vehicles, or they may originate from inside sources such as viral aerosols. Current filtration systems can be very energetically expensive and restrict airflow in ventilation systems. By using preferential concentration of inertial particles in turbulence alongside electric charging of aerosols, it may be possible to design a smart filtration system. This would filter out more aerosol and be more energy efficient. This system would promote coalescence of smaller particles resulting in easier filtration.
