The project will begin with a review existing knowledge of the impacts of EcoSan products on soil systems and crop growth. This will be followed by agricultural field trials in two countries to add more primary evidence to this pool of knowledge. Finally theoretical modelling will be used to try to predict the potential for this practice at a larger scaleThe direct outcomes of this research will be a better understanding of the benefits of land application of excreta, and identification of linkages between different development goals, which will increase advocacy for EcoSan within wider development discourse. In time, and with support from further research in the area, this could lead to the development of more robust guidelines, standards and certification schemes for EcoSan which will facilitate wider adoption by individuals, communities, farmers, WASH practitioners and governments. In turn this will improve public health, soil health, food security and climate change mitigation.
