Memory Through Landscape: The Spatial Turn in Holocaust Mediation.

As the Holocaust moves beyond living memory, there has been a 'spatial turn' in research and commemorative practices. This approach foregrounds landscapes of Holocaust memory over the testimonies of individuals.Nevertheless, the relationship between technologies of mediation and these landscapes has been little studied. This practice PhD will examine different filmmaking technologies, such as virtual reality, livestreaming, 360 degree cameras, and the ways in which they mediate Holocaust memory landscapes through close study of Westerbork, Treblinka and the Imperial War Museum (IWM).This project is well-timed to document and study the changeover of the IWM's Holocaust Galleries, opening in spring 2021, which departs radically from graphic archive images toward contemporary landscape footage.I will produce three short films and a written thesis to present the first comprehensive account of the role of filmmaking technologies in the spatial turn in Holocaust remembrance.
