State and Spectacle: Riot and the Cinematic Aesthetics of the Metropolitan Police

My research has two central aims - to analyse aesthetic representations of the Metropolitan Police Forceand to understand how they intersect and interact with the wider discourses around the monitoring,control and representation of what Tiratelli has called the 'situational dynamics' of public space inLondon. Focusing on three key historical moments, the Notting Hill Riots of 1958, the Brixton Riots of1985 and the London Riots of 2011, I will explore the changing ways in which police forces have beenvisualised - and visualise themselves - both in terms of their role in everyday public life and in momentsof riot and spectacular political dissensus. My research will engage with the changing ways theserepresentations have intersected with the broader discourses of British identity, race and law and order.
