My project will show how The Orcherd of Syon, a Middle English translation of Catherine of Siena's fourteenth-century Latin mystical treatise Il Dialogo, originally written for a mixed audience of men and women, was adapted to address the needs of its female audience, the nuns at Syon Abbey. I will demonstrate how the translator of the Orcherd modifies the contents, organisation, and language of the original and creates a gendered reader. Research on the Orcherd will contribute to our understanding of how female audiences shaped the production of Middle English devotional literature in late medieval England.
