The 'post-truth' age of populism and the erosion of global constitutionalism.

I propose a qualitative comparative case study focusing on the US, the UK and Europe. The study will bea large-N sample of the 28 countries of the European Union and the United States and will thensupplement these findings with a focused case study. Firstly, the study will focus on the emergingcharacteristics of populism as nationalist, anti-globalisation and pro-state sovereignty. I intend to developan analytical framework which highlights these distinctive characteristics and explores how populism hasbeen interwoven with the ideologies of nationality, anti-globalisation and state sovereignty. Secondly, Iwill broadly explore the impact on global constitutionalism today, particularly focusing on the modernhuman rights movement which intends to promote and protect international human rights, andincidentally uphold democracy and the rule of law which can be seen to be facing a crisis internationally.This exploration and analysis will focus on civil and political rights under the International Covenant onCivil and Political Rights. Thirdly, I will conduct a closer case study on migrant rights. I will outline antimigrantrhetoric and policy as a tool for populist, nationalist, and anti-globalisation governments. I willthen conduct a close legal and policy analysis on how populist leaders or governments have rolled backon migrant rights within the state and the short-term and long-term impact that it has on the migrantsand the state as a whole. I propose a human rights-based approach to this research project which will beat the intersection of law and international relations.
