EXCEED THESPACE PROVIDED. Florida International University (FID) is an urban, doctoral granting institution located in Miami, Florida's largest population center. FID, with its current enrollment of over 67% minority students and consistent with its mission which includes "Health" as a primary strategic theme, seeks the opportunity to continue to help fulfill the national need to enhance the successful participation of minorities in Biomedical Graduate Programs. To support this goal, FID proposes to renew its Minority Access to Research Careers Student Training in Academic Research (MARC U*STAR) Program. The goal of the program is to stimulate interest and passion among underrepresented undergraduate students in pursuing a career in biomedical sciences (BMS) research and to provide them with the tools that will increase the likelihood of success towards this end. The FIU MARC ITSTAR program will increase the pool of these talented students who are well prepared academically and experienced in research. This will be done through a series of well-structured workshops and courses and each trainee will be actively involved with a research project. Workshops will include but not be limited to: Study Skills, Data Bases & Library Research, and Graduate School Application Process; and courses will include but not be limited to: Ethics/Responsible Conduct in Research and GRE Preparation. There will be specialty workshops, as deemed necessary (e.g. cell culture, imaging, cloning). Also, trainees will give a scholarly presentation of their research at the annual FIU Mini Symposium and at a national meeting, in addition to writing an Honors thesis (optional). At least 80% of the trainees completing the program are expected to be admitted into a graduate BMS program. FlU's intent is to increase the participation of minority group members in BMS research so that they value its importance and consequently commit to BMS as a rewarding career choice and life's work. At least 90% of the trainees that complete the program, and subsequently are admitted into graduate school are expected to succeed in the graduate BMS program of their choice. FIU MARC U*STAR program will be evaluated formatively (to evaluate the program process), summatively (to evaluate overall program performance), and longitudinally (to determine if the long term goal of increasing the number of under-represented students in Biomedical Graduate Programs is being achieved.
