英文摘要
EXCEED THE SPACE PROVIDED. The goal of the proposed training program is to introduce medical and dental students to the concept of scientific research, the principles of scientific experimentation, the proper methods of data analysis, and the interpretation and application of research results. This goal will be accomplished by having the students work in the laborato- ries of a highly skilled investigator with a proven track record in the mentoring of students in the research process and who has an actively funded, peer reviewed, biomedical research program. The ultimate goal of the program is to provide trainees with an understanding and appreciation of the biomedical research process so as to enhance their practice of medicine and dentistry and to encourage some members of this select group of students to pursue careers in academic medicine and dentistry. During this funding period, the program has provided meaningful research experiences for 147 students (99 medical students and 48 dental students). For the past four years, 10% of the medical and dental students who participated in the program were of an underrepresented minority and 29% were female. Trainees from the past 5 years have already published 39 abstracts and 32 scientific papers as a result of their research experience. Based upon the successful tracking of 65% of trainees for the past 9 years, 96% view their research fellowship as a positive experience. Ninety four per cent have completed a residency and 15% have completed a research-based fellowship. Thirteen percent have an academic position, eight percent are presently doing research. Seven percent have obtained research funding. Of those former trainees who are currently involved in research, all indicated that the Summer Research Fellowship had a direct influence upon their decision to pursue research. Some said the program helped them decided between clinical research and basic science. Ninety eight per cent of former trainees recommended continuing the Summer Research Fellow-ship Program. Even many of those who chose a career in private practice view the research as a valuable component of their training. In summary, the data indicate that this Training Program for Medical and Dental Students has been successful. In only one year, 1996 were any slots open (3). In addition to the 20 medical students supported by this training program during this funding period, an additional 8 to 10 obtained research funding from other sources. In addition to the 10 dental students funded by the program, at least 6 were supported by other sources. The demand for slots exceeds the supply. We therefore requesting funding for five more years for a total of 30 positions, 20 for medical students and 10 for dental students.
