Fluorinated Fragments: Partially Fluorinated Carbocycles and Heterocycles from Upgrading HFO-1234yf

This project will develop new chemical reactions for the recycling of 2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene - a modern refrigerant that is being manufactured on scale. The student will use 2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene to prepare new classes of partially fluorinated carbocyclic and heterocyclic ring-systems designed as fragments for drug discovery. The student will use flow chemistry to scale the synthetic methods. They will also build quantitative and data-intensive models to understand the conformational preference of these new partially fluorinated ring systems. Training will be provided in aspects of synthesis, catalysis, computational chemistry, flow chemistry and data analysis.
