Modernity and the 'Medical Man': Neo-Victorian Doctor Figures at the Turn of the Millennium

My PhD thesis will interrogate the figure of the 'medical man' in neo-Victorian texts of the late Twentieth and early Twenty-First Centuries, contextualising him alongside modern socio-medical concerns and continuing, or changing, cultural attitudes towards clinicians between the fin-de-siècle and the turn of the millennium. This project will consider the dialogue between past and present as a reciprocal one, both resituating the neo-Victorian doctor within recent clinical theory, as well as considering the enduring cultural narratives which underpin historical literary representations of Victorian doctors.
