Global health governance and the limits of state-centrism in contemporary conflicts

The collapse of the government and civil war in Somalia has led to rampant issues involving poverty, lack of authoritarian rule and exceeding violence. Many of the people have also become displaced due to poverty, famine and conflict. These issues have led to the exceeding mortality rate. However, disparities in health systems may be the biggest contributor to poor health in Somalia and the rest of Horn of Africa. There are three administrative regions that vary in stability and functionality: SouthCentral, Somaliland and Puntland. However, there is a dire need to systematically research these health systems and compare to determine whether the differences in political structures can have an effect on health outcomes. This project aims to undertake a comparative case study approach involving qualitative and quantitative methods. The methods will mostly involve a questionnaire pilot, structured interviews for health professionals (for example, nurses, consultants, surgeons, and trainees) and data relating to funding, staff availability, resource and distribution of services.
