A Lithic Origin for Music? Experimental Investigations into the Neuro-Auditory Resonance Hypothesis

This proposal intends to explore the cultural and biological processes that incorporated music and musical instruments into the cultures of early hominins. Specifically it aims to investigate a novel "Neuro-Auditory Resonance Hypothesis", originally proposed to account for the origins of Palaeoart. The research questions will be addressed using practical investigations of interconnections between the material properties of stone tools, the techniques involved in creating them and the social environment in which toolmaking occurs. In particular,the thesis will focus on the idea that music and toolmaking, both noisy, percussive and socially learnedpractices, co-evolved as mutually reinforcing behaviours.
