Wo/Man Made Wor(l)d: Textual Transmission and Translation in the Censorship of Medieval Female Authorial Voices

Reading for female voices in medieval literature is intrinsically paradoxical: they have often been mediated by men. How may we determine whether the received texts are representative of authorial versions? Exploring the process of textual reception from the twelfth to the fifteenth centuries, I will compare twentieth century women writers with their Continental counterparts, examining how the interventon of male editorial alters the reception of their works and whether this phenomenon differs across polities. By investigating the complex creation of author-character identities through textual re-presentation, I will highlight the impact of gendered textual interventions in medieval culture and its reception.
