Why four Gospels and not one, or any other number? What difference does it make for the wayhistorians reconstruct Jesus' life, theologians explicate his significance, or indeed religious readersencounter him? Using the four different crucifixion narratives as a test case, this project will bringinsights from the New Testament and early Christianity into dialogue with modern theology and willoffer a fresh and thorough investigation into the hermeneutical significance of the fourfold canonicalgospel.
