Theatre on Water: Aquatic performances in theatres of the Roman Empire, the archaeological evidence and cultural contexts

The proposal considers water performances in Roman theatres. While the use of Roman amphitheatres for water displays is well known, few scholars have given aquatic theatre shows attention. This project will define more fully what kind of shows were performed in theatres, in relation to social expectations and emphases in imperial drama, and will examine the archaeological evidence more closely to see how these water installations were supplied. It will focus on both their architectural aspects and their cultural traditions and influences, and will try to understand better their origins in Italy and chronological diffusion across the Roman empire.
