difficulty of assessing whether motivations and actions are determined by a consciously desiringsubject or unconscious drives. I propose that Bataille's idiosyncratic conception of inner experience in concert with Lacan's psychoanalytic interpretation of the issue problematises and reconfigures idealist notions of inner experience, desire and drive, demonstrating why these notions are not natural categories but determined, in part, by historical circumstance. Thus, the aim of my project is toevidence what this problematisation is, what its implications are, and how Bataille and Lacan's methods align.
