Portraying themselves as champions of death awareness within a death-denying Western culture, the 1970s Death Awareness Movement and the contemporary Death Positivity Movement promote such values as authentic self-expression, death acceptance, personal growth, autonomy andpersonalised death. Through close analysis of post-1970s horror texts, my project will consider the extent to which supernatural and realist horror writing of this period engages with death-related cultural anxieties and offers an alternative perspective on death, one which counters romanticisednarratives and provides insight into a different kind of death from the middle-class 'good death' central to much thanatological research.
