Becoming Native: Settler-Colonial Life Writing in Israel/Palestine and South Africa

My research sets to explore 20th century Jewish-Israeli and white South African life writing, exploring literary strategies of self-narration in negotiating settler subjectivity. Focusing on the writers' affiliation to 'space' by analysing notions such as 'indigeneity', 'belonging' and 'home', and read against the cultural politics of representation in Israel/Palestine and South Africa, I will explore how writers utilise life writing to imagine, articulate and narrate their own 'locations'. Applying a comparative methodology, integrating life writing studies, settler-colonial studies, and archival work will reveal global commonalities in settler identities, alongside more idiosyncratic local variations. Better understating settler identity's motivations and formation will advance settler-colonial studies to think beyond the settler/native dichotomy and offer concrete paths towards the decolonisation of the settler-colony.
