Human development begins post conception from merely a ball of cells that eventually forms the complex architecture of the human body. A proportion of these cells are stem cells, pluripotent cells with the capacity to differentiateinto many different cell types. Adult stem cells are vital in replenishing dying cells and repairing damaged tissues. Stem cells have also revolutionised biological research as a versatile tool to model complex biological systemsand diseases. Primary interest is understanding the mechanisms of stem cell biology to exploit this system to develop sophisticated stem cell-based approaches to model complex diseases. The prospect of cell-based therapy as a modality of regenerative medicine is now also becoming a tangible reality by the day.
