This study will examine sacred choral works by Pietro Torri (c. 1650-1737) in order to assess the importance of this hitherto neglected composer and his contribution to choral music at the court of Elector Maximillian II Emanuel in Munich, and more generally to the period. Torri joined Max Emanuel's court in 1689 and was amongst the Elector's most prized musicians, following him to Brussels (1692) and back to Munich (1715) when he was appointed Hofkapelldirektor and held significant influence over all aspects of court music. The court enjoyed a significant reputation as one of the most brilliant musical centres in Europe, and the Elector spared no expense in gathering some of most skilled and highly- regarded musicians of the day. This project will create critical editions of a selected number of Torri's psalm and mass settings, alongside a thesis examining his contribution to devotional music at the Munich court, his broader contribution to musical life, and his impact on his contemporaries and successors both in Munich and beyond.I have selected five works, which suit the purposes of Ex Cathedra as a large choir and orchestra. Two masses have particularly grand orchestral scoring, with one including four trumpets and timpani, providing the opportunity for a particularly attractive modern reconstruction (performance at court would have been limited to liturgical feast days and holidays). All scores are in manuscript (some with additional separate parts) and are for SATB choir unless otherwise stated with orchestral/string (and continuo) accompaniment.Confitebor - (solo soprano/SATB) located in Strasbourg, Berlin (digitised) and Dresden (parts - digitised).
