Working Class-ical Music: Embodying Working-Class Identity within Compositional Practice

Examining how the embodying of working-classness within compositional practice can provide original creative developments to the field. This practice-based research project will generate a folio of new compositions that explore the creative possibilities working-classness can have on compositional practices through interdisciplinary methods. Following a variety of theorists such as Bourdieu (1984) and Skeggs (2004), working-classness can be understood as having a lack of capitals (e.g. cultural and economic) which results in a struggle for value and the development of alternative cultural practices.My methodology is informed by Bourdieu's theory of Habitus (Bourdieu, 1984; 2000), Skeggs' concept of "Person Value" (Skeggs, 2004; 2011), the work of other working-class artists (e.g. Grayson Perry and Tony Harrison), and auto-ethnographical research methods. The interdisciplinary compositions I create provide a fuller representation of working-classness through the inclusion of non-sonic elements (theatre, film, and text) and research from these different fields.This methodology enables working-classness to be embedded in both the sonic/non-sonic elements used and their construction to create original interdisciplinary compositions.The outputs of this project comprise of:- A folio of new interdisciplinary compositions embodying working-classness (1-2 substantial works and a number of smaller developmental compositions).- A supportive critical commentary to help articulate my research context, aims and conclusions.- AV documentation of performances that highlight research elements.These combined outputs provide a method for the embodying of working-classness within new classical music compositions to bring new creative developments to the field.
