The gut and the liver communicate with each other to maintain a healthy and optimal environment. This communication can happen when products from the liver such as bile acids and bilirubin are broken down by the microorganisms found in the gut (known as the microbiome). Gene expression in the intestine can be influenced by these processes, which can cause changes to the physiology This project will combine computational biology approaches as well as laboratory and animal experiments to investigate how the liver and intestine communicate with each other in healthy ageing.
