The central aim of this research is to understand how readers interacted with and read books printed in the first half of the 16th century: more specifically, - how did readers in early modern Scotland, interact with and read the books, printed between 1500 and 1550, that they owned and/or that passed through their hands? The project will ask that question in relation to humanist learning, to editions of classical texts, and to the interests that readers manifest through their annotations. To answer these questions, I will study printed books with marginalia using a palaeographic perspective to find patterns in study methods and interests from different readers. Moreover, using palaeography to study marginalia will help the researcher in pinpointing where and when such books have been studied and read, as well as contribute to our understanding of the emergence of the humanist italic script in early modern Britain. The kind of readers that I will examine and study are connected to the type of texts that I identified through initial catalogue research. The catalogue research was conducted using the key-word "marginalia" and selecting specific libraries, chosen because of their collections and history (Durkan and Ross, 1961): Edinburgh University, National Library of Scotland, Aberdeen University, Glasgow University, St Andrews University and Innerpeffray library; after finding books that have handwritten marginalia, I identified books that have mostly two topics: classical texts and theology. This clearly does not surprise us, considering the specific period taken in consideration, and it is highly likely that the final dissertation will be about Scottish learned readers, because these individuals had the intellectual tools to read and comment on such texts.
