Security for women from female-headed households in Thailand

This research seeks to understand the lived security experiences of female communities in Thailand. Currently, research focuses on underprivileged female Thai communities, such as those from minority household structures and/or low income. By drawing together relevant literature from geography, security, and feminist studies, amongst others, I aim to gain a complete understanding of security for Thai women, including ontological, societal, and technological. Ultimately, this research seeks to clarify the security opportunities and challenges of underprivileged female Thai communities. I hope the findings will also contribute to ground-up, purposeful action to improve technological access and security practices for women in Thailand, which will hopefully support organisations, contribute to purposeful action to enhance technological access for these communities and raise awareness of Thailand's technological needs within various global academic communities. I will also highlight that the lived security experiences and digital security for women in Thailand do not reflect the perceived security and digital access for these communities. Thus, this thesis will aim to raise important questions around Thai women's safety, safe spaces and ontological security and how they relate to digital access and security. The thesis will draw upon relevant literature and framed within the context of security, including, but not limited to, notions of the home and family, ontological security, female-headed households, and digital security. Data collection will occur through ethnographic methods, primarily through working within women's centres across Thailand. Data may also be collected through interviews with relevant industry professionals, academics, government officials, and other relevant stakeholders. Literature and fieldwork findings will then be analysed through a focus on Sen's Capabilities Approach and attempts to operationalise his approach, such as the work of Martha Nussbaum and Dorothea Kleine's Choice Framework. This approach permits a ground-up approach that will highlight the importance of analysing community-specific security needs and wants. These findings will then be framed within the context of digital accessibility, usability, and security within underprivileged female Thai communities.
