Examining the use and reception of the Song of Songs in Franz Rosenzweig's The Star of Redemption

This project aims to discuss how far Rosenzweig's interpretation and reception of the biblical book The Song of Songs, influenced his philosophy of love in The Star of Redemption, and differs from prior receptions of the book and emphasize Rosenzweig's, arguably, revolutionary interpretation of the poem as a result. This project builds on the methodologies I used during my MRes (funded by M3C Masters Scholarship), which compared and contrasted modern and ancient interpretations of Proverbs 31:10-31via the use of Reception History. To accomplish this I constructed a potential original understanding of Proverbs 31:10-31 by appealing to inter-textual allusions within the text and other biblical texts, supported by literary critical methodologies, to explore how the poem was understood by an ancient audience, and then compared this with modern receptions and interpretations of the poem. This required extensive work with Biblical Hebrew, a skill which I attained during my undergraduate studies, which also culminated in a dissertation that incorporated Biblical Hebrew translation and interpretation.
