The central aim of this research is to bring together disparate research threads in order to reinstate the holistic sartorial category of undress. This will be achieved by answering the following research questions:What was the cultural value and function of undress in daily life in Britain?How was undress constructed, manufactured, and sold?How can reconstructive and embodied methodologies contribute to dress history research?Application and impact:This project will have major methodological and subject-specific impact. It will establish undress as a 14 / 30 significant area of historical value, and will provide a framework through which undress may be used to explore the body, gender, medicine, age, physical spaces, times, sociability, and morality. The reconstructive approaches will be a major contribution to the development of best practice in making as a historical methodology. This is a vital moment for the 'embodied turn' (Hilary Davidson, 2019) in history, and this project will be at the cutting edge of research in this field.
