This PhD project will focus on a neglected genre, the biographical musical, and rarely considered questions about female agency within the construction and performance of these musicals. In so doing, it will significantly build on Stacy Wolf's groundbreaking work on women musical characters in A Problem like Maria: Gender and Sexuality in the American Musical (2002) and Changed for Good: A Feminist History of the Broadway Musical (2011), and Grace Barnes' explorations of female representation and gender inequality, predominantly in commercial English-language musicals (2015, 2020).
