Developing from the proposed subject of study - that is, to contribute to an understanding ofurbanism through research into the urban centre of Knossos, through an exploration intopreviously under-explored excavation records and finds - I propose to focus on the WestCourt and Theatral Area (WC and TA). My passion for this proposed focus of researchsprings from: the desire to provide an overview of urban life across the whole period, fromthe Neolithic to Roman times; the potential to bring together over 100 years of excavationwork, much of which has been underexplored; and the opportunity which the area providesto discuss theoretical concepts of power through the choreography of urban space. TheWest Court and Theatral Area is excitingly unique in its research potential due to its positionbetween the 'Palace' of Knossos and the wider urban settlement. As the meeting point ofcauseways and roads, and sitting just outside the Minoan palace walls, an overview of thedifferent manipulations of the built environment of the West Court and Theatral Areaprovides an exciting and unique opportunity to understand town life in Knossos as navigatedoutside, but within the sphere of, the central elite.
