This project examines how female authors published by the Minerva Press between 1790-1820 use nonstandard English in direct speech in their Gothic novels to depict class, gender, and region. This research provides insight into the sociocultural biases and emerging stereotypes of late 18th and early 19th century women, via texts that were widely read at the time, but are now out of print and under-researched.
