A Saint in Stone: Materiality, Place and Intangible Heritage in the study of the Cult of Saint Magnus

The material legacy of Saint Magnus, earl of the Northern Isles from 1098-1116/17, is under-researched. This PhD will take an interdisciplinary approach of recording medieval ecclesiastical material culture and surviving church sites, together with landscape and seascape analysis to record Saint Magnus' influence within Shetland's spiritual and cultural identity, and community, in comparison with Orkney, Caithness, Faroes, Iceland and Trondheim, where his cult was venerated. The research will be of significance within the expanding field of pilgrimage studies, shedding new light on the materiality of the Cult of Saints and pilgrimage and saintly worship in the North Atlantic.
