英文摘要
We will investigate the relationship between collective spin and charge fluctuations and the bulk physical properties of various quantum material. In recent years, it has been found that transition metal materials can be engineered to display collective low-energy spin and charge excitations. These fluctuations can in turn modify physical properties or stabilize new ordered states. For example, spin excitations can cause superconductivity by mediating an attraction between electrons or stabilise magnetic order through "order through disorder mechanism". Here we will use neutron and x-ray scattering to directly probe the excitations. We will also make laboratory measurement and prepare sample in Bristol. Measurements will be interpreted through model theories and first principle (DFT) calculations of the electronic structure, magnetic excitations, and phonons. Materials to be studied will include cuprates and other transition metal oxides, and other topical materials. This project falls within the EPSRC research areas, Superconductivity, Condensed matter: electronic structure, Condensed matter: magnetism and magnetic materials.
