英文摘要
The Pantagruelian prose fictions of François Rabelais (1494?-1553) would seem, at first glance, to be unlikely candidates for musico-theatrical adaptation, but over the long-nineteenth century six such works appeared on the French stage. How might these little-known adaptations change our reading of Rabelais? Do his fictions share or anticipate structural or aesthetic elements of their musico-theatrical adaptations? Examining the interplay between the works of Rabelais and their musico-theatrical afterlives, my PhD will examine, problematise, and historicise the reciprocal model of adaptation, applying it to works which challenge socio-cultural and aesthetic expectations and conventions, both of the sixteenth and long-nineteenth centuries.
