"This is a PhD research project in Physics. The aim of the project is to build a new experimental setup and demonstrate a telecom quantum memory based on rare earth doped crystals. The work program is divided into three phases.Phase-1 is related to building the experimental setup. This will be mainly composed by the cryogenic system and the laser system and will underpin experiments for several years. Phase-2 is related to the coherent spectroscopy of stoichiometric samples and testing of storage protocols in bulk crystals. To mitigate the risks originating from the material choice, different crystals grown by different companies/research groups will be studied.Phase-3 focuses on waveguide integrated memory protocols. Our final objective is to realise fibre-compatible photonic QM on chip, featuring unprecedented functionalities and readily integrable with photon sources and detectors, for quantum networks applications. Indeed, during the final phase of the project, we will benchmark the QM performance by connecting it with quantum dot single photon sources and single photon detectors. "
