Using Encoded Values To Promote Non Complementary Interventions In Online Social Spaces

AbstractThe following is a proposal building on existing research by the author in encoded values, based on Schwartz Theory of Basic Human Values.Schwartz values offers a unique paradigm at the bridge of highly subjective but measurable models (such as sentiment analysis) and highly objective but difficult to quantify models (such as encoded ethics). It also has advantages over sentiment, ethics, and emotion models in that it is been widely suggested in various research that values, as measured by the Schwartz values model, are highly cross-cultural and trans-linguistic. I would suggest, therefore, that they may have a high level of applicability to combating intersectional hatred with the assistance of computational models.Isolation and support tactics which incorporate non-complementary interventions are very effective for countering hateful abuse in public spaces. However, these have not been widely employed online. I propose a means facilitating non-complementary interventions by supporting interactions between victims of hate and allies, using an application of Schwartz values.Hypothesis and RationaleI believe that Schwartz values may be useful towards identifying and combating hatred at a highly localized level, as opposed to meta-analysis (for example, of extremist networks). By understanding and encoding individual human motivations and interests, we keep the interests of online communities themselves at the centre of the design philosophy.This leans into the concept of intersectionality at the heart of the proposal. For intersectionality to be measurable, we will need to correlate and co-ordinate various types of motivations and behaviours. Value systems offer a unique point of convergence for these, and Schwartz values are arguably the best way of measuring that convergence.
