An investigation into young people's attitudes, experiences and beliefs on menstrual health

This research explores whether recent shifts in government policy, Relationship and Sexuality Education and popular culture are influencing young people's attitudes towards menstruation and menstruation stigma. The research will engage with participants using a range of qualitative, creative methods to address the following questions: 1. What are young people's embodied experiences of menstruation? 2. To what extent do discourses of stigma and shame feature in young people's discussions of menstruation? 3. How might the research findings from this project inform Wales's new, interdisciplinary approach to education on menstruation? These questions aim to engage with participants in thematic discussions around menstruation. The rationale is to encourage discussions around social, economic, political, relational, and educational themes as they pertain to young people and their experiences of menstruation within a school environment. The ethical issues of school-based research with young people are considerable and fully recognised, with appropriate steps planned to address them.
