Usable privacy for e-health data of vulnerable users

This project explores the role of wearables and tracking of daily activities in the context of protection of vulnerable users, whilst embracing the benefits of IoT for sharing appropriate data. The emergence of ubiquitous and wearable technologies alongside 'Smart Homes' brings Internet of Things (IoT) technology into everyday life with a promise of making domestic tasks easier and enhancing quality of life, but there are issues around the impact this has in situations of domestic abuse. The UK has reported a rise in police recorded domestic-abuse crimes with charities such as Refuge seeing a substantial increase in calls.Alongside the research in making IoT more acceptable to individuals for collecting their e-Health data we should consider the move towards reducing violence against women alongside such initiatives as the Plymouth City Council Safer Streets. Further investigation will be made into ease of use and usability aspects to enable the devices to be comfortably used without danger for a wide range of users.The project will apply and explore established usability principles for domestic abuse survivors [9] and following work in the field by the supervision team (Dr Alkhafaji on wearables; Dr Atkinson on Domestic Abuse; Dr Liz Stuart on Usability; Dr Dang on Privacy preserving mechanisms).
