This research project is focused on the numerical simulation of microstructure evolution during processing of aluminium alloys, using a combination of Calphad-type thermodynamic modelling and the phase-field method, to predict microstructural features of these alloys for any given set of process parameters. The project will be part of activities of the Constellium University Technology Centre (UTC) at Brunel and will be conducted in close collaboration with the Materials Made Smarter Centre (MMSC), which delivers multidisciplinary research in the area of Digital Manufacturing. You will have the opportunity to interact with and receive advice from Constellium's industrial research engineers in addition to the MMSC's leading researchers in materials, physics-based modelling, and data science, across MMSC's five partner institutions (Universities of Sheffield, UCL, Cambridge, Brunel, Nottingham, and Swansea). A strong background in physical metallurgy and materials process modelling is essential. Experience in crystal plasticity, aluminium alloys and computer programming is desirable.
