The aim of this project is to understand the effects of additives, dopants and major impurities on the chemical and structural properties of uranium oxides in terms of the defect chemistry caused. In doing so, it may therefore be possible to classify whole groups of potential additives/impurities in terms of the defects caused and their subsequent effect on the material characteristics. If successful, that knowledge and understanding of the defect chemistry could potentially enable the prediction of an additive's effect on oxide properties, and hence the prediction of key material properties of interest for potential new/future fuel cycle materials.
