This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The Biostatistics and Data Management Facility (BDMF), directed by Dr. Jimmy Efird, was established early in 2004 with the primary mission to provide a range of customized statistical and database management services for RCMI researchers. This facility is the only one of its kind in the UH System, however, and it has rapidly extended services to other biomedical researchers and clinicians in the John A. Burns School of Medicine, Biomedical Engineering, and Tropical Medicine. The overall goal of the BDMF is to provide quantitative resources essential for investigators to conduct methodologically rigorous biomedical research in a timely, cost-effective manner. The specific areas of focus are clinical trials design and analysis, experimental/laboratory research design and analysis, computational statistics and database management, statistical training, and image analysis/modeling. The staff members of the Facility work closely with investigators to develop a sound design for their studies, determine an optimal sample size, and develop a coherent data analysis plan that reflects their study design and specific aims. Once a study proposal has been approved by the Institutional Review Board, further assistance is provided in study randomization, database development, SAS programming, statistical analysis, scientific graphics, post-study data analysis, as well as in the writing of papers for publication and revised submission.
