This project will investigate the coupling between bound states of electrons and holes in the semiconductor cuprous oxide and microwave electromagnetic fields in the low temperature (4K and below) limit. The aim is to study the basic physics of excitonic states resonantly coupled to a strong microwave field produced by a superconducting microwave resonator, and to explore whether such a system can reach the quantum regime. The student will collaborate with researchers at Cardiff University as part of an existing collaboration. The main technique used will be conventional laser technology, plus common methods for crystal growth and characterisation. The project is blue-skies research, with no collaborations with end users (industry, government) planned at this stage. All pre-existing IP is open access in the public domain, and it is anticipated that this will be true for the project. There are no links to defence, and no nuclear or other restricted materials will be used.
