A computational model of analogical thinking as a framework for creative decision-making in music composition

Analogy is a key feature of human cognition, and its role in music represents a burgeoning field of research. This PhD will investigate the role of analogical thinking in music composition using a practice-based approach, by adapting Douglas Hofstadter and Melanie Mitchell's analogy-making program, "Copycat", as an algorithmic framework for creative decision-making in music composition across five analogical contexts. By comparing resulting work with human- and computer-created music, this research aims to generate insights into music cognitive processes involved in composition, and offer potential applications in artificial creativity.
