英文摘要
Tarsus was Cilicia's provincial capital and a leading cultural and commercial hub of the EasternMediterranean. Tarsus' coin output was large and diverse, comprising over 600 different types underRome (29 BC-AD 268), yet this important source for the region's diverse culture, society, and economyremains virtually untapped.Kraft's milestone study of Roman coinage (1972) briefly touched on Cilicia, utilising stylistic links todemonstrate regional centralisation of die production in Asia Minor. Other studies (von Aulock 1963;Levante 1985; Karbach 1993; Ziegler 1993) reveal much about Cilicia and its administrative history, butnot Tarsus. Tarsus' iconography (Ziegler 1993) and the presence of Tarsus' coinage outside Cilicia (Tek2016) have only received brief attention, indicating their variation, wide circulation, and the potentialexistence of an economic zone. The study of dies, styles, and flans is essential to formulating Tarsus' coin production and evaluating thecoins as source material, and to understanding the political, economic, and cultural history of Tarsus andthe surrounding area. Watson (2019) illustrated the inapplicability of a general production model for allregions, necessitating examination of mints as part of a regional study, outstanding for Tarsus.
