A cyclorotor is a rotating-wing system, consisting of a set of pitching blades that rotate about a horizontal axis parallel to their leading edge. This offers a high level of manoeuvrability and is extremely suitable for applications that require sustained hovering and thrust-vectoring capabilities. Cyclorotors are currently being tested on different scales - from nano and micro air vehicles to larger scale aircraft that caters to the rising interest in the Urban Air Mobility sector in the form of air-taxis. With relatively little optimisation so far, cyclorotors already perform on par or better than traditional propellers at small scales. However, we have very little understanding of the flow physics, and we need this to further optimise their performance.
