This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This protocol is designed to provide systematic follow-up (with pentagastrin-stimulated calcitonin levels) of ret proto-oncogene positive patients who are members of Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia 2A or 2B families and who have undergone thyroidectomy. These include young patients who have undergone prophylactic thyroidectomy (e.g., thyroidectomy based on the at-risk genotype before the development of demonstrable medullary thyroid carcinoma) as those treated surgically for medullary thyroid carcinoma. Thus, the research questions relate to the efficacy of prophylactic thyroidectomy in the prevention of medullary thyroid carcinoma in genetically at-risk individuals and the efficacy of aggressive thyroidectomy in the treatment of familial medullary thyroid carcinoma.
