英文摘要
This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. It is thought that children with evidence of high exposure to PCBs will perform more poorly on neurobehavioral and neurocognitive tests assessing executive function, memory and attention than low-exposed children from the same area. The relevance of the study is that the nature of the impact of PCB exposure on general cognitive abilities of children is somewhat unclear, although early studies have shown differences in cognition, attention and memory performance after exposure to PCBs in children. West Anniston, Wellborn and Hobson City populations represent a unique opportunity to compare the effects of low versus high PCB exposure in children at a critical developmental epoch (12 to 15 years of age), as exposure in the area is well documented. A population case control study nested within a cross-sectional study involving 6th through 8th grade students in the impacted communities is being conducted. A psychometric battery and serum lead, mercury, and cadmium, as well as PCBs will be performed on at least 300 students and psychometric testing and PCB levels performed on a parent.
