Whether Victorian railway embankments or Motte and Bailey castles there is a long history of earthworks in the UK. Many of these geostructures were created constructed long before any standards, code of practice or even suitable compaction equipment were available. Thus these old geostrutures were largely uncontrolled at the time of construction. As climatic patterns become more erratic (increased rainfall, flooding, extensive drought), it is important to understand how changes in the climate these may affect the stability of such geostructures (onset of cracking, water ingress, local slope failure, washouts). This study aims to develop a non-invasive approach to evaluate the current and future performance of these geostructures. Using historical earthworks data intrusive works and the results from non-invasive methods (e.g. georadar and geophysical surveys), these heritage will be modelled and their stability assessed in the short term and in the long term based on future UK climate projections. The project will focus on the assessment of man-made heritage geostrutures that may be at risk of failure due to climate change.
