This PhD will not only challenge presentist explanations and solutions regarding the crisis of the highstreet, but present and evaluate the history of Uppingham in a way that facilitates future policy beingbuilt upon maintaining the town's essential character. The importance of this aspect is evident, as evenin the eighteenth century, Uppingham's famous market ensured the town did not 'fade into oblivion'(Hughes, 2014).
