The colour of power - Using participatory action through law to challenge energy greenwashing.

This project will interrogate the legal legitimacy of environmental claims made of 'tradable green certificates' (TGCs) by domestic energy suppliers. It does so by exploring of the legislative and regulatory framework, by challenging 'green' energy in court and by ethnographic analysis of this process. It raises concerns about the validity of marketing 'green' energy tariffs, and questions what mechanisms are suitable to challenge corporate behaviour, including litigation or other forms of public participation. The work is situated in a critique of market-based instruments and analyses and exemplifies the ethical and logistical problems of using market mechanisms to tackle climate change.
