British Conceptions of China and Japan: Transnational Networks of London, Shanghai and Tokyo 1860-1899

My research explores the multifaceted nature of British conceptions in the transformative period of 1860-1899 through a focus on five discrete key groups of British people: diplomats, artists, journalists, women and businessmen. Utilising textural analysis of three different types of sources written by these individuals, I will examine the impact of interactions between people and locations, which continue to influence contemporary British images of China and Japan. In doing so I will challenge the traditional narrative of a singular image of China and Japan driven by developments in Britain and highlight the multifaceted nature of British conceptions.
